Biographical / Historical
Confessing Synod Ministries grew up out of the Denominational Ministry Strategy (DMS), which clergy founded in Pittsburgh in 1982. At first, they sought to support newly unemployed steelworkers through advocacy. These activities escalated to protests against Mellon Bank and other large financial institutions. Though supported by the Lutheran Church in America (LCA) in DMS’s early years, key leaders such as the Rev. D. Douglas Roth and the Rev. Daniel Solberg were defrocked in 1984 and 1985. In 1987, the group’s name was changed to Denominational Ministry Strategy Extended (DMX) and then to Confessing Synod Ministries. In 2016, the group continued to function.
