Biographical / Historical

The Pennsylvania Ministerium was the first Lutheran church body in North America founded with help by Henry Melchoir Muhlenberg (1711-1787). The group was named “German Evangelical Lutheran Ministerium of North America” until 1792, when it adopted the name "German Evangelical Lutheran Ministerium of Pennsylvania and Adjacent States." It is commonly known as the Pennsylvania Ministerium. The Evangelical Lutheran Ministerium of the State of New York and Adjacent States and Countries was organized through the desire from pastors in New York for a synod separate from the Pennsylvania Ministerium.
