Biographical / Historical
Beryl Blake (B.B.) Maurer was born on March 5, 1920 to Herman Joseph and Catherine Jane (Brewer) Maurer in Morgantown, West Virigina. He graduated from West Virginia University with a B.S. in 1941 and from the Lutheran Theological Seminary Gettysburg with a B.D. in 1949. Maurer also received his M.S. for the University of Tennessee in 1953 and a Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University in 1959. He was ordained in the West Virginia Synod in 1949. He married Margaret Ellen Cook on September 5, 1948 in St. Clara, West Virginia. Their children included: Ruthanna Katherine, Rebekah Jeanette, Johnathan Herman, and Marianne Elisabeth. B.B. Maruer died in 2003.
Maurer’s professional career included: Pastor at St. Johannes, St. Clara, West Virginia from 1947-1952, Cronhardt Travelling Fellow for 2 years at Gettysburg Seminary; Board of Higher Education Fellow for 3 years, U.L.C.A.; U.S.A.F., 1943-1946; research assistant at the Agricultural Experiment Station at the University of Tennessee in 1953; graduate assistant at Pennsylvania State University from 1954-1957. He was also the Director of Research and Development for the Central Pennsylvania Synod from 1957-1962; and Secretary Division of Town and Country Churches L.C.A. He also worked and taught at West Virginia University.
