Biographical / Historical

Henry G. Stecher was born on July 16, 1792, the son of Melchior John George and Elizabeth Messinger Stecher.

One of the founders of the Lutheran Seminary at Gettysburg, Henry G. was first educated for the Lutheran ministry at Easton where he also studied medicine and archeology. He began his ministry work at Loganville, in York County, and served there from 1819 to 1839, after which he moved to Hummelstown and ministered for 24 years until retiring.

During his pastorate in Hummelstown "Father Stecher" baptized 650 children, confirmed 450, served communion to 4853 parishioners, and laid to rest 600. He died on April 20, 1870, age 77.
