Scope and Contents

This collection documents the activities of Rev. Dr. Herman G. Stuempfle. Included are sermons, services, and presentations. Brackets have been added to denote titles given by processor. Some dates may not refer to the creation of the document, but when they were later used i.e. in a conference. In this instance circa is used to provide the approximate timeframe.

The records are arranged in 10 series. The contents of each series and subseries are arranged in chronological order. Series include:

Rev. Dr. Herman G. Stuempfle Jr. was born April 2, 1923 in Clarion, Pennsylvania, to Herman G. and Helen (Wolfe) Stuempfle. Married Gretchen S. Parkinson September 8, 1956 in Gettysburg, PA. Herman and Gretchen had three children- Stephen, David, and Kristin. Stuempfle graduated from Susquehanna University in 1945 and LTSG in 1946. He was ordained in the Central Pennsylvania Synod in 1947. Stuempfle then received an advanced degree from Union Theological Seminary in 1967 and doctorate from Southern California School of Theology in 1971. Stuempfle’s career included being the Associate Pastor at St. Matthew, York, PA 1947-1950; Pastor, Our Saviour, Baltimore, MD 1950-1953; Pastor Christ Lutheran, Gettysburg, PA 1953-1959. He was the Associate Director for the Board of Social Missions United Lutheran Church in America from 1959-1962. In 1962, Stuempfle was named the John and Susannah Ulrich Professor of the Art of Preaching at Lutheran Theological Seminary Gettysburg; he continued to teach at LTSG through the spring semester of 2003. He was the chaplain at LTSG from 1966-1967 and dean of the seminary from 1969-1971. Stuempfle was the President of Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg from 1976-1989. He retired in 1989. Stuempfle died March 13, 2007 in Gettysburg, PA.
