Biographical / Historical
Rev. Timothy Tilghman Titus was born in Loudon County, Virginia, on March 4, 1829. He was the son of poor parents, and the youngest of ten children. He manifested an eager desire for learning when quite young, and the influence of his mother and her prayers in his behalf inspired his call to the ministry. He went to Gettysburg in the fall of 1848, and commenced his studies in the preparatory department, a student of Dr. Stoever. Though he was given assistance by the beneficiary fund, the amount allowed him was inadequate, and he had to temporaily leave college to earn money teaching and selling books. He graduated as valedictorian in 1853. He served as a tutor in the preparatory department and studied with the class in the seminary, reciting most of the lessons and keeping up wth the class. He married Rachael M Witherow on July 17, 1855. He served in six different pastoral fields: Stoughstown, Lower Merion, Milton, Springfield Ohio; St. John's and Trinity in Hagerstown, which was organized and built under his pastoral care. Preaching until his health and voice failed, he reluctantly quit the pastoral work and removed to Hartwick Seminary in June 1871. He was co-editor of the Lutheran Home Journal . He authored "History of Paul's, Lower Merion, Pennsylvania" in 1860. Rev. Titus died February 15, 1873. Sources consulted: Jensson, J.C. (1890). American Lutheran Biographies Wentz, A.R. (1964).
