Biographical / Historical

Alleman was an alumnus of Gettysburg Seminary. Born in Roxbury, Pennsylvania, March 27, 1897. Henry fought in World War One in France and Germany. After returning he graduated from Cumberland Valley State Normal School, Shippensburg in 1922. He then began a career in public school education as a teacher and then a principal for Woodbury High School in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. In 1925, he felt the call towards ministry and enrolled in the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg. He graduated in 1928 and began his ministry in Virginia in Stephens City. He was in Virginia from 1928-1937. He then was called to McConnelsburg, Pennsylvania. He was there for two years then moved to a call at both Abbottstown and East Berlin from 1941-1948. In 1949 he was the pastor in Bloserville, Pennsylvania. He left in 1952 moving to Red Lion from 1953 to 1955. He was then the pastor in Spring Grove from 1956 to 1961. The last church he served before retiring was in Marrietta, Pennsylvania. After retirement he was still active among various churches, including Zion Lutheran Church in Marrietta, St. Paul Lutheran Church in York, and Trinity Lutheran Church in East Berlin. Henry Snyder married Pearl Irene Baker on April 5, 1921. Together they had five children: Elwood Snyder, Martin Luther, Geraldine Pearl, Josephine Joan, and Ethel Evangeline. Pearl passed away on July 24, 1968. Henry remarried to Edythe Gregory Orndorff on August 5, 1969. Edythe passed away on November 4, 1974. Up until the day he died he was said to be active in both the community and his daily life. Henry Snyder was on various committees for both the Virginia Synod and the Central Pennsylvania Synod. Including the delegate for the 14th Biennial Convention in Minneapolis. He served on the board of Pressler Home for Children from 1956-1963. He was a part of the community through being involved in PRA and ecumenical organizations in the community. He was the president of the East Berlin Community Library. He was also involved in every Vacation Bible School. He was honored with the Distinguished Alumni Award from Shippensburg University. He was the author of various historical and religious articles and books including: “History of the Lutheran Congregation of Stephan’s City, Virginia,” “A History of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, McConnelsburg, Pa.,” and other various articles. Henry Snyder Alleman died on November 12, 1990.
