This collection documents the activities of Rev. Silas D. Daugherty. Included are diaries dating between 1890-1927, mostly chronicling his time as a foreign missionary.

Biographical / Historical

Rev. Silas Davis Daugherty was a foreign missionary and Lutheran clergyman, serving in South America from 1908-1912. He was also Superintendent of Missions, Philadelphia Conference, East Pennsylvania Synod, 1901-1908 and Missionary Superintendent of East Pennsylvania Synod, 1912-1932. After retirement in 1932, he served on the Board of Directors at Gettysburg Seminary for several years.

Ordained by the Pittsburgh General Synod in 1890, Rev. Daugherty served as pastor at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sharpsburg, PA, 1891-1896; Grace Lutheran Church, Altoona, PA, 1896-1899; and Immanuel Lutheran Church, Norwood, PA, 1899-1901.

Rev. Daugherty was born on April 17, 1857 to Jason and Angeline (Black) Daugherty in Smicksburg, PA. He received an A.B. from Gettysburg College in 1888; graduated from Gettysburg Seminary in 1891; and received a Doctor of Divinity from Gettysburg College in 1913.

He died on June 18, 1939.

Processing Information

This collection was originally processed in 1995 during a manuscripts re-housing project initiated by the help of a small grant from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission led by Project Manager Barbara D. Miles, Region 8 Archivist. The original processor is unknown.

It was reprocessed and redescribed by Edwina Landry in 2014. The finding aid was reformatted and updated by Archivist Sheila Joy in June 2018.
