Scope and Contents

This collection documents the activities of Dr. Mildred E. Winston during her time as associate secretary of the ULCA Board of Education; director of the LCA Lay Workers Placement Service; on the Board of Deaconess Work; and as consultant to the Division of Welfare of the National Lutheran Council on the resettlement of displaced persons.

Included are work files, studies, questionnaires, reports, meeting minutes, correspondence, notes, and photographs.

The collection is organized into 3 boxes. Box 1: Records Pertaining to Women in the ULCA, Deaconess Board, Displaced Persons; Box 2: Photographs, and Box 3: Oversized Photographs.

Biographical / Historical

Dr. Mildred Evelyn Winston was the associate secretary of the Board of Higher Education of the United Lutheran Church in America (ULCA) from 1928-1962. In 1962, when the Lutheran Church in America (LCA) was established, she became director of the Lay Workers Placement Service for the LCA’s Board of College Education and Church Vocations. Retiring in 1969, she continued to serve on a part-time basis in the educational field.

Dr. Winston also served and participated in other organizations including: The Summer Service Project, Conference on Church Vocations for Women, the Division of Welfare of the National Lutheran Council, Agricultural Migrant Labor Committee, Regional and National Christian Student Conference, Lutheran Student Work in Greater New York, Lutheran Student Association of America, Lutheran Student Work, United Christian Student Movement, United Student Christian Council, World Student Service Fund, Chicago Theological Seminary, and Biblical Seminary in New York.

She was also a member of the following professional organizations: American Association of University Women, National Association of Women Deans and Counselors, International Mental Hygiene Association, National Lutheran Educational Conference, American Personnel & Guidance Association, University Christian Mission (1945-1949), University Commission of the Council of Church Board of Education (1940-1950), The Madras Christian College for Women-Board of Governors, and Kappa Delta Phi Sorority.

Dr. Winston began her career as a schoolteacher and taught high school English in Philipsburg and Sunbury, Pennsylvania from 1921-1925.

Born on July 13, 1900 in Sunbury, Pennsylvania, she received her B.S. from Susquehanna University in 1921. She went on to earn a M.A. in psychology from New York University in 1928 and that same year she studied for a B.R.E. degree (religious education) at Biblical Seminary in New York. She was awarded the honorary degrees of Litt. D. from Carthage College in 1952 and a Doctor of Humane Letters (L.H.D) from Gettysburg College in 1956.

A speaker of many lectures to women’s groups, student assemblies, and conferences, Dr. Winston has also produced many writings, such as higher education, personnel, and vocational leaflets. Additionally, she published two books including joint authorship of Going to College (1936) and Women, A Resource in the Church (1947).

Dr. Winston died on August 30, 1980 in White Plains, NY at the age of eighty.
