Biographical / Historical
Rev. Robert Warren Koons was born on July 11, 1917 in Altoona, PA to John Raymond and Kathryn Annabelle (Herr) Koons. He attended Central Pennsylvania Business College from 1935-1936, received an A.B. in English from Gettysburg College in 1943, a bachelor of divinity from Gettysburg Seminary in 1946, attended Union Theological Seminary in New York City, and received an honorary doctor of divinity from Susquehanna University in 1958.
Rev. Koons was ordained by the Central Pennsylvania Synod in 1946 and served as assistant pastor at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hagerstown, MD from 1946-1950. He also served at Zion in Sunbury, PA from 1950-1960, Christ Lutheran Church in Gettysburg, PA from 1960-1967, Lynchburg, VA from 1967-1974, and Winchester, VA from 1974-1982.
Upon retirement from active ministry in 1982, Rev. Koons served as Associate Director of Field Education at Gettysburg Lutheran Theological Seminary and later as chaplain of the seminary’s Church of Abiding Presence. Rev. Koons passed away on November 1, 2012.
