Biographical / Historical
Hartwick Seminary, Otsego County, New York was founded in 1797 through the will of Rev. John Christopher Hartwick, a Lutheran minister who arrived in the U.S. colonies from Germany in 1746. Rev. Hartwick died on July 17, 1796 and Hartwick Seminary was founded in September 1797, carried out by Rev. Hartwick’s estate executers Jeremiah Van Rensselaer and Frederick A. Muhlenberg.
The decision of the final location of the school was postponed, however, until 1815 when the first seminary building was established. Dr. John G. Knauff, an Albany physician, succeeded Van Rensselaer as executer of the Hartwick Estate in 1810 after his death.
