Biographical / Historical
Dr. Herbert Christian Alleman was a Lutheran minister and theologian and professor emeritus of Hebrew and Old Testament literature and theology at the Gettysburg Lutheran Theological Seminary.
The son of a minister, the Rev. Dr. Benjamin F. Alleman and Charlotte Benson Alleman, he was born at Bloomsburg, PA, May 13 1868. He attended grade schools in Shippenburg, went to high school there, and graduated at Gettysburg Academy in 1883.From the academy, Dr. Alleman entered Pennsylvania, now Gettysburg College, receiving his A.B. degree with first honor in 1887. he was principal of Jefferson, Md., Academy from 1887 to 1888 and a student at the Evangelical and Reformed Theological Seminary, 1888 and 1889. He entered the Gettysburg Lutheran Theological Seminary in the later year, completing his studies in 1891. He was the principal of the Gettysburg Academy in 1890-91.
Dr. Alleman was licensed by the Eastern Pennsylvania Synod of the Lutheran Church in 1890 and ordained in 1891. His first pastorate was at Trinty Lutheran Church, Chambersburg, which he served from 1891 to 1896. He was pastor of Christ Lutheran (College) Church, Gettysburg, from 1896-1900 and of Messiah Church, Philadelphia, from 1900 to 1911.
Dr. Alleman did graduate work at the University of Pennsylvania from 1907 to 1911; received his doctor's degree at Temple University in 1908 and at Gettysburg College in 1923 and an LLD degree at Franklin and Marshall College, Lancaster, in 1935. He became professor of Hanover and Old Testament literature and theology at the Gettysburg seminary in 1911, continuing until his retirement in 1940. He was director of the Tressler Orphan Home, Loysville, Pa., 1896-1900; director and secretary, Lutheran Publication Society, Philadelphia, 1901 to 1911; member of the Board of Publications, United Lutheran Church, Philadelphia, 1925-1936; member of he Common Service Committee of the General Synod, 1907-1909; representative of the United Bible Society, New York, 1920-1938.
Among his writings are: "The Bible, a General Introduction," 1914: "Prayers for Boys," 1925: "The Old Testament, A Study," 1935; The New Testament, A Study," 1935: "New Testament Commentary," 1936; "Old Testament Commentary" and numerous other books, articles and book reviews for the Lutheran Church Quarterly and other articles in Religion in Life and The Christian Century.
Dr. Alleman married Miss Julia Suesserott, a native of Chamberburg, in Pawtucket, R.I., on July 8, 1897. They had one son, Prof. Benson S. Alleman.
